14 Vacation Destinations You've Never Heard Of

*9-Minute Read*

I know, I know. Non-essential traveling during COVID-19 isn’t realistic but, when it is, the travel bug will likely bite you even deeper. Therefore, the top of the Eiffel Tower and the streets of Times Square will probably have even more tourists than usual. But there are other places that may not have as large of a crowd, post-pandemic.

Here’s a few of them:

1) Berchtesgaden, Bavaria, Germany

Berchtesgaden (pronounced burk-tes-gah-den) is just north of the Austrian border. Therefore, tourists in Salzburg may want to add this German town onto their itineraries. It is perhaps best known as the homeland of Berchtesgaden National Park, but there are more places to explore in this area. Hikers would also enjoy Mount Kehlstein and historians would enjoy what lies atop its peak
the Eagle's Nest. While the Nest is now a restaurant/beer garden, it used to be an estate belonging to Adolf Hitler. Even though he rarely visited, members of the Nazi Party consistently held meetings there. Salt mines are also a part of the town's history. To visit them, you must hop onto a miner's train and ride more than 2,000 feet into the Bavarian Alps. For those who'd rather stay outside of the mountains, the beautiful Lake Konigssee is ideal during the warmer months and the Berchtesgaden Christmas Market is held every December.

2) Bled, Upper Carniola, Slovenia

This Slovenian town is named after its most popular tourist attraction
Lake Bled. In terms of attractions, the lake serves as a kind of town square. In the center of the "square" is Bled Island, which is home to Bled Castle and the Church of the Mother of God. Around the lake, you would also find thermal pools, Sava Dolinka River, and Kavarna Park. The latter location is the only spot where you can try "the symbol of Bled cuisine"an original Bled cream cake. And don't stress over when to visit Bled. The warmer months are suitable for boating and swimming, but the lake becomes an ice-skating rink during the winter. There is always something to do in this nature-filled community.

3) Cartagena de Indias, Bolivar, Colombia

This town is often referred to as simply Cartagena. It is filled with sandy beaches, resorts, cruise ships, and shopping/dining areas. However, this is not your everyday tropical destination; one of the major charms of Cartagena is its colonial architecture. In "Old Town," you can visit the former residences of viceroys, a church that was established back in 1603, and a museum that is centered on gold. This Colombian community is also a golden place for festivals
each January, the city holds both the the Cartagena International Music Festival and the Hay Festival (a literary event). They also celebrate the Sweets Festival before Easter Sunday and have several festivities on November 11th.

4) Desroches Island, Outer Islands, Seychelles

Like Cartagena, Desroches Island is a tropical paradise. Except this locale is one of the 115 islands that make up the African nation of Seychelles. Desroches is a former coconut plantation is now a hot-spot for sunbathing, both deep sea and fly-fishing, and diving. And where do you lay your head? At the five-star Four Seasons Resort, in either a beach suite or beach villa. Now, this luxury may be somewhat remote, but it is only a 50-minute flight from Mahe (the nation's capital) and many natives speak English (as it is one of the nation's three official languages).

5) Huaraz City, Ancash, Peru

The city of Huaraz rests alongside the Santa River, which is only the beginning of the natural wonders to be seen. The Cordillera Blanca (White Mountain) range is also next to the city. Within the mountains are five main lagoons, most of which are made up of turquoise-blue waters. If you'd rather remain inside, there are attractions like the Sanctuary of Se
or de la Solicitud (Man of Solitude) and Ancash Archaeological Museum. Just outside the city's borders are two sites of archaeological remains, the Chancos Thermal Baths, and yet another lagoon.

6) Interlaken, Interlaken-Oberhasli, Switzerland

During the winter, this mountain town is a mecca for winter sports. Each of the three ski regions is filled with cross-country skiers and toboggan riders. During the summer, the lakes of Interlaken are in the spotlight; Lakes Thun and Brienz are filled with boaters. Year-round, the beauty of the Swiss town cannot be denied. One way to see this for yourself is to hop on the Golden Pass, a panoramic train that stops in Interlaken on its way to either Montreux or Lucerne. Another way is to hike on a trail that is several miles long. To say the least, it's no surprise that Interlaken has been designated as a "Wellness Destination."

Like Interlaken, Knysna prides itself on having a healthy, relaxing environment. The town is located at the very bottom of Africa and could be described as the continent's version of Venice. There are areas where people canoe or kayak, rather than drive their cars. That, as well as the gorgeous beach, makes up the tropical environment of Knysna. However, it's not just sand and palm trees. There are also forests and nature reserves that you can hike or bike through. There's even an elephant park and several events held throughout the year.

8) Koh Samui, Surat Thani, Thailand

Koh Samui is one of the towns on Samui Island, in which you can reach by ferry from Donsak (a town on the mainland). Should you choose to fly, you'll probably see the Big Buddha statue
the island's most iconic image. Many of Samui's towns are filled with beaches, and Koh Samui is no exception. Chaweng, Lamai, and Mae Nam are some of its most popular. And with beaches come luxury resorts, dining, and shopping. Fisherman's Village and Bang Rak, for example, have all three. Plus, you have several day trip options, like ferrying to Ang Thong National Marine Park or to the Butterfly and Insect Kingdom Park.

9) Phong Nha, North Central Coast, Vietnam

Phong Nha is a riverside village that is based around Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. It is the home of several ethnic minority groups, as well as endangered animals. The mountainous park is home to many gigantic caves, so it's no wonder why they offer several types of tours. The one that has been sold out nearly every day for seven years is of Han Sang Doong Cave. It is possibly the largest cave in the world; it even has its own ecosystem. For those who are leery of caves, there are hiking, kayaking, and motorbiking tours. There's even a pub that is revolved around, as Blake Shelton would say, "drinkin' that ice cold beer."

10) Quebec City, Quebec, Canada

Quebec City is a town that reflects the unique French Canadian culture. The city cites Old Quebec, a fortified town/UNESCO World Heritage site, as the #1 attraction to visit. This is partially due to Chateau Frontenac, the most photographed hotel in the world. Other historical sites include Ile d'Orleans, the civilization and fine arts museums, and St. Anne Shrine. But there are outdoor attractions to be seen as well. There's a waterfall that's 90 feet taller than Niagara, a national park with a glacial valley, and the largest water park in eastern Canada. And there are plenty of seasonal activities
Quebec City hosts festivals and other events all year long.

11) Rangiroa Island, Palliser, French Polynesia

You may have heard of Bora Bora and Tahiti, but there are 116 other islands that make up the French Polynesia. One of them is Rangiroa, the second largest atoll in the world. Unlike nearby islands, Rangiroa is a coral atoll. It is home to Blue Lagoon, as well as the Avatoru and Tiputa passes. These are natural aquariums, so it is the perfect place for divers and snorkelers. And the hotel options are simply amazing. There's the Hotel Kia Ora's overwater bungalows, Hotel Maitai's beachside bungalows, the Motu Teta private island, and the Aranui 5 cruise ship. Now, that's a hard decision to make!

12) Rottnest Island, Western Australia, Australia

Do you know which animal was voted as the world's happiest? The quokka! And this A-Class Nature Reserve is home to many of them. A great way to find them is by cycling, and you don't even have to worry about avoiding any cars. However, those cute little critters aren't the only attraction this Australian island has to offer. There are over 63 beaches and 20 bays. That means there are more than 83 swimming spots on one island. You can also play golf, visit a family fun park, and even skydive. And even though there's no hotels or pharmacies, the island does have shops and a spa. Quite simply, Rottnest Island is a great place for a day trip.

13) Sintra, Lisbon, Portugal

If you want to tour fancy residences, this is the spot. Sintra is home to the National Palaces of both Pena (pictured above) and Sintra, as well as the ruins of the Castle of the Moors. There are also mansions and villas that are almost as swanky as the palaces. And the views are absolutely beautiful. The town is surrounded by the pine-covered hills of Sintra-Cascais National Park, which look down upon the Atlantic Ocean and the Romanticism-style architecture. While driving to Sintra isn't recommended, the town is accessible by bus and train. And, once in this Portuguese town, there are plenty of buses and group tours for you to utilize.

14) Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, United States

Parks and Passes

Only around 3,000 people live in Wisconsin Dells, yet it has six water parks. One of them is the largest in the country and the other five are those of resort hotels. Therefore, I'd say that this town definitely deserves the title of "the waterpark capital of the world." But water parks aren't the only attraction this small town has to offer. There are also go-karts, zip-line tours, golf courses, museums, and more. And there's not only numerous places to stay at, there's also plenty of places to eat at. Eateries include seven wineries, three breweries, and even ten fine-dining restaurants.

I myself haven't been to any of these fourteen vacation spots; they're all on my bucket list. If anyone has been to one or more, was it truly a dream destination? Or are its appearances deceiving? Feel free to comment on your experience(s).
