11 Hypoallergenic Mixed Dog Breeds
I've had seasonal allergies for as long as I can remember. Dust, pollen and, unfortunately, dogs can have me running towards the nearest box of Claritin or Benadryl. It starts with irritation at the corners of my eyes, then comes the bloodshot eyes, then comes the sneezing and, lastly, fatigue from all of the above. It sucks because I adore my family's and friend's dogs... and I wish I had my own. So, I find myself on Google, looking up hypoallergenic dog breeds. The American Kennel Club has a list of purebred breeds with this label. But what about mixed breeds? Whether you're for or against the designer dog practice, there are some out there who need homes. So, I managed to find some of those where both parents are on the AKC's list.
Here are a few:
1) Affenchon
AKA, Affenchon Frise
Affenpinscher + Bichon Frise
Height = 9-11 inches * Weight = 7-12 pounds * Lifespan = 12-15 years
The Affenchon has somewhat of a dense coat. The fur is of medium-length; it is sometimes curly and sometimes straighter. You should use a pin brush, slicker brush, and comb to brush your dog anywhere from once a day to once a week. An Affenchon should also visit the groomers about once every four to six weeks, especially if it has curlier fur.
2) Affenshire
AKA, Affen Yorkie
Affenpinscher + Yorkshire Terrier
Height = 8-12 inches * Weight = 4-13 pounds * Lifespan = 12-15 years
The Affenshire's coat can be long and smooth or shorter and shaggy with a mustached face. Either way, the fur needs to be brushed twice or thrice per week with a pin brush, slicker brush, and comb. Your dog should also be taken to the groomers' about once per month.
3) Bich-Poo
AKA, Bichdoodle, Bichoodle, Bichondoodle, Bichonpoo, or Poochon
Bichon Frise + Poodle (toy or miniature)
Height = 9-15 inches * Weight = 6-22 pounds * Lifespan = 12-18 years
The Bich-Poo has a wooly, curly, dense, medium-length coat. Daily to weekly brushing with a slicker brush is needed in order to avoid knots and tangles. Grooming should occur once every six weeks to four months. Bich-Poos are also prone to tear stains, so keep a cloth tissue on hand to dab its eyes with.
4) Bolonoodle
AKA, Bichon Bolognese, Bolodoodle, Bolognesedoodle, Bolognesepoo, Bolondoodle, or Bolopoo
Bolognese + Poodle
Height = 10-12 inches * Weight = 5-15 pounds * Lifespan = 12-15 years
Since one parent is a poodle, the Bolonoodle has soft hair that ranges from wavy to curly. It has fluffy, medium-length fur. Mats and tangles pop up only occasionally, so using a rubber bristle paddle brush on your dog just once to thrice a week will suffice. It should be taken to the groomers' every few months. However, it is important to note that some grooming supplies (i.e., soaps or shampoos) may cause skin allergies. To be on the safe side, you should opt for hypoallergenic products for your hypoallergenic animal.
5) Chinese Crestepoo
AKA, Chinese Crestedoodle, Crestedoodle, Crestedpoo, Crestepoo, or Poochis
Chinese Crested + Poodle
Height = 10-20 inches * Weight = 7-11 pounds * Lifespan = 10-12 years
The Chinese Crestepoo has a long, soft, dense, wavy coat. And while its ears are hairless, its legs and feet are covered with straight hair. Some even have beards. Brushing daily is needed to make sure that the dog's legs and feet are free of loose hairs and its coat is free of matting. Therefore, using a pin brush, slicker brush, and/or dematter is most appropriate. A trip to the groomers' is only necessary a few times per year, mainly to get its long fur trimmed.
6) Chinese Frise
AKA, Chinese Bichon, Crested Bichon, or Crested Frise
Chinese Crested + Bichon Frise
Height = 5-12 inches * Weight = 5-14 pounds * Lifespan = 10-15 years
The Chinese Frise has dense and fine hair, which ranges from straight to curly. Some of them have shorter hair in places, while others have shaggy fur all over their bodies. The latter is strikingly opposite than a hairless Chinese Frise, which is possible but uncommon. Unless your dog is one of those few, you should brush its hair with a hard bristle brush and metal comb four to five times per week. A trip to the groomers' is less frequent—once every four to six months will suffice.
7) Chonzer
Bichon Frise + Miniature Schnauzer
Height = 10-16 inches * Weight = 25-35 pounds * Lifespan = 10-13 years
The Chonzer has a wavy or curly outer coat with a soft undercoat. Its fur is short and dense. They all have long ears that dangle close to their faces. Your dog will need to be combed once, twice, or thrice a week. You should also frequently wipe around its eyes to avoid matting in those areas. When it comes to grooming, it depends on how long you want its fur to be. Many owners take them to be clipped somewhat frequently, as a longer coat tends to look messy.
8) Cotonese
AKA, Coton Maltese
Coton de Tulear + Maltese
Height = 8-12 inches * Weight = 6-16 pounds * Lifespan = 12-16 years
The Cotonese has a soft, long, dense coat that ranges from wavy to curly. Therefore, a white dog resembles a cotton ball. You should use a metal brush fur three to four times a week to eliminate mats and dirt. Other suitable brushes are a pin brush and a slicker brush. These dogs should also be groomed once every few weeks.
9) Maltichon
AKA, Bichon Maltese or Maltese Frise
Maltese + Bichon Frise
Height = 8-11 inches * Weight = 6-13 pounds * Lifespan = 12-15 years
The Maltichon has a soft, long, wavy, coarse coat with either a silky or velvety texture to it. You should use a pin brush and comb on your dog every day or, at minimum, every other day. You should also take it to the groomers' once every four to six weeks for a trim. Fun Fact: Two of the most popular cuts are the "teddy bear" and the "puppy." And finally, Maltichons are prone to tear stains like Bich-Poos, so give special attention to that area.
10) Poo-Ton
AKA, Cotondoodle, Cotonpoo, or Doodle-Ton
Poodle + Coton de Tulear
Height = 8-12 inches * Weight = 7-15 pounds * Lifespan = 12-16 years
The length of a Poo-Ton's coat ranges from medium to long. It also ranges from wavy to curly. The hair tangles easily, so you should use a pin brush and comb on your dog daily. A Poo-Ton needs to be groomed once every two or three months. Special care should also be given to its droopy ears. And the Poo-Ton, like the Bich-Poo and Maltichon, is also prone to tear stains.

Height = 10-26 inches * Weight = 6-85 pounds * Lifespan = 10-18 years
The Schnoodle's coat is either curly like a Poodle or wiry like a Schnauzer. This "teddy bear dog" with a beard needs to be brushed once or twice a week. It also needs a trim every four to twelve weeks. Special attention needs to be on its ears and around its eyes. Too much ear hair can cause ear infections. Too much hair around the eyes could affect their vision. And, alas, it's another breed that has the tear stain issue. Unfortunately, no dog is 100% hypoallergenic and no breed may fail to ignite my allergies. The struggle is real, folks.
